Hello, I’m Melanie Kelly, sole owner and cake maker at Mel Kelly Cakes and Bakes. My passion for baking and decorating cakes stems from watching both my amazing Grandma and Nan bake and cook from scratch when I was a little girl.
No measurements, no recipe books, just pure skill, knowledge and technique! The smell of fresh lemon cakes takes me straight back to those moments; which is why I believe cakes are so special. They are not just food to be eaten. They are something to be admired, they are part of something special, and they should be just as memorable as the celebration for which they are made.
Mr Tumbles' bag...
It was after I had my children that I really started baking again and of course had to have a go at making the coveted children’s novelty birthday cakes. The first one was a rather large Mr Tumbles’ bag that I stayed up until 3am making. I’m sure a lot of us can relate to that! My child was not interested in the slightest much to my dismay, but it brought make all those dear childhood memories and started me on the path to where I am now.
Helping Local Charities...
Before setting up my own business I worked within mental health and addiction recovery services and these areas remain deeply personal and important to me. It’s not much, but I donate birthday cakes to the residents at the local mental health recovery and treatment centre where I used to work and donate 5% of my sales to local charities in Blackpool that support people with mental health, addiction and homelessness difficulties.
